In today’s society, slavery is something that is always thought as of the past. If you were to question someone whether or not they thought slavery was still alive, most would say no. However, slavery still exists in the modern day. Slavery is now known as human trafficking. When we think of human trafficking, we think of some foreign third world country that is still in development. That is not the case; human trafficking happens right in our backyard and in our faces. Although, there might not be a human trafficking ring in our literal backyard, it happens in the United States and it also helps to produce our products. According to the fact sheet of human trafficking, there are about 60,000 victims of human trafficking in the United States alone. Not only are there actual slaves living in America that are involved in Human trafficking, there are people all around the world who are in slavery. The amount of people in slavery today are estimated to be about 21-36 million. Not only are there people enslaved, but they are profitable for about $150 billion dollars each year. People are trafficking other people as sex slaves, which is about 22% of slave victims, whereas 78% are being trafficked as labor slaves. When it comes back to profit, the traffickers make this money by people in the states and all over the country supporting this unintentionally. People are buying slave made products, such as cars, computers, chocolate, cell phones, and clothing.
Having over 36 million people being enslaved is not acceptable. Throughout all of the times taking movements and having wars (I.e civil rights war), slavery should not be still going on. People should not be taking other humans captive and forcing them to work and sell their bodies just to feed other people’s greed. Slavery is something that is not thought of as existing today, but it does. People should take the step of ending this world wide crisis. In today’s world, we do not need a war. Most of us today know slavery is not the best choice for labor. Most of us do not agree with enslaving others as we would not want to be enslaved. We the people should take a stand and do what’s right to help ending slavery. Today, another abolition movement would just mean taking these efforts to more than just your community. Today, we would be able to end slavery by bringing this information to said people, governments, businesses, investors, international organizations, faith communities, schools, and consumers. If we all got together today and educated the people of human slavery, we would be able to end it. Instead of looking it as “not being in our backyard” we can put an end to it. We can petition slave made products, cutting off the want for slaves as they aren’t making what is important to them: money. We can end this by coming together to try and rid the world from slavery. It’s not just an 1800’s thing, slavery is still prominent today and should be abolished, we just have to be willing to do so. |
